Three French health institutions cyber-attacked

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

On 25 January, several Ramsay Santé Group establishments were affected by a cyber attack. Three of them are located in the Auvergne Rhône Alpes region, including the Jean-Mermoz private hospital (Lyon), the private hospital of Eastern Lyon (Saint-Priest) and the Convert clinic in Bourg-en-Bresse.

These institutions were momentarily disrupted. Indeed, several surgeries were postponed and only one patient was transferred to another hospital. Thankfully, the usual schedule was able to restart only 2 days after the attack.

The hospital group is talking about an "external intrusion attempt" on the health establishments' computer servers, but the type of attack isn't yet known. Nevertheless, a security procedure was very quickly put in place, namely the closing of external accesses. At the same time, an investigation was carried out by experts. It revealed "no theft of data or propagation of the incident to patients". However, investigations are continuing in order to regain access to the group's network. In the meantime, the facilities have been working with paper documents.

Moreover, the group explains that this attack has nothing to do with the one in 2019. Indeed, in 2019, all the French establishments of the Ramsay Santé Group were paralysed following a large-scale cyber attack.

Apparently, cyber-attackers haven't made good resolutions regarding attacks on health care institutions.
