Ten days ago the Gard departmental council was attacked by hackers and since then their website has been inaccessible. Attempts to get to the site have resulted in a page with the word "forbidden". So, until the site is available again, it is not possible to do administrative procedures online with the Conseil départemental.
The hackers have already requested a ransom of 3000 dollars from the County Council. But the issue is that we don't yet know if any confidential data has been recovered and if so, what kind of information may be in the possession of the hackers.
In order not to spread the virus, employees have been instructed to pay attention to the emails they receive and send. But for the time being, the department's communications department does not wish to comment on the subject.
Paralyzed municipalities, blocked administrations, threatened hospitals, these headlines unfortunately make the news. Cyber attacks in the public sector have been endemic for the last few years. Digitalization and the Covid-19 pandemic have played a key role in this. Public administrations are responsible for managing a large amount of confidential information, and this data is particularly exposed.
